Hopewell Borough

Located in the foothills of Hopewell Township’s Sourland Mountains, Hopewell Borough has been able to maintain its small town allure while evolving and growing since it was founded in 1688.  Mom and Pop shops and antique dealers join gourmet eateries along Broad Street, where each spring a town-wide yard sale is held.  Autumn brings the annual Harvest Fair featuring local food, crafts and old-fashioned fun while raising money for community non-profits. The historic train station, just off the main stretch, now acts as a handsome venue for farm markets, outdoor movie screenings and art shows.

Rolling countryside and working farms give the immediate surroundings a rural flavor, but Hopewell Borough lies only 8 miles from Princeton and the busy Route 1 corridor. Many businesses and services, however, have chosen to lay down roots in the local community, which is served by the Hopewell Valley Regional School system.  With outdoor pursuits and family activities beckoning year-round, small town life in Hopewell Borough is anything but dull.

Many of the homes in Hopewell Borough are carefully preserved examples of authentic Colonial and Victorian architecture, which stand in neat rows along sidewalk-lined streets. Newer, yet well-established, neighborhoods with proudly maintained homes fan out from the center of town and eventually give way to gentleman’s farms and new construction on spacious lots. The cost of single family houses in the area ranges from $125,000 to $1,000,000+. The average sale price in the Borough is $260,000. The 2006 tax rate was 1.78; the ratio was 118.64. The average sale price in the Township is $335,000. The 2007 tax rate for the Township was 1.92; the ratio was 105.87.
